Hebrews 10 Commentary
Please choose a passage
The law is not sufficient and animal blood doesn’t completely atone for sin. They served as ongoing reminders of sin.
Jesus came to earth to fulfill God’s will, which was to make a once-and-for-all sacrifice for sin. It was necessary that He come into the world because the Levitical sacrifices were insufficient.
Jesus fulfilled God’s will. He died on the cross and was resurrected, being the ultimate, once-and-for-all sacrifice. In doing so He established a new covenant.
Earthly priests make animal sacrifices again and again, yet they cannot take away sins. Christ, in one sacrifice, covered sins forever. Christ now sits on a throne at the right hand of God. His work of atonement is complete.
In this New Covenant under Christ, the law of God is in our hearts and minds, and our sins have been forgiven and forgotten.
We are empowered to live the new resurrected life of Christ through entering God’s presence. Christ is our priest, and He makes our hearts clean and pure by faith.
We should be fully committed to confess our hope in God. We should love and do good for our fellow believers. We should meet with and encourage one another to do this, because the day of judgement approaches.
If we abandon our faith and choose to live sinfully, we will get a negative reward. We will lose our inheritance in the future kingdom.
The Hebrews have proven in the past that they are capable of enduring through trials, suffering for Christ’s sake, and remaining faithful.
We can be confident in our hope in Christ, which will be rewarded. We need to endure in our faith, which is the will of God and comes with a reward.
The law, earthly priests, and earthly sacrifices did not atone for sin. Christ's sacrifice, once and for all, atoned for the sins of those who believe in Him. He serves as our High-Priest in Heaven. He is a superior priest and a superior sacrifice, since He intercedes and sanctifies us forever. We are called to live lives of faithful obedience until our lives on earth are complete, enduring through suffering, so that we can inherit the promises of God. For believers who abandon their faith and sin freely, without repentance, there will be a loss of reward and a failure to inherit the promises of God. But we are empowered by Christ, our superior priest, and the Spirit living within us, to live righteously, to endure suffering with confidence, thus doing the will of God.
